The Valayathil family traces its ancestral roots to the ancient Vellioor family, whose leaders were forced into a dramatic exile along the winding waters of the Meenachil River following a 1720 cemetery dispute and political defiance against the King of Thekkumkoor in Kottayam. Settling in the wild forests of Pala, patriarch Vellioor Kurianouppen and his son Ouseph transformed the rugged terrain into flourishing agricultural properties that established the permanent Valayathil branch.
During this exile, patriarch Vellioor Kurianouppen provided shelter to King Marthanda Varma of Venad, protecting him from his enemies, the Ettuveettil Pillamar. When Marthanda Varma conquered Thekkumkoor in A.D. 1730, he rewarded Kurianouppen with the prestigious royal status of “Sitting in Royal Presence” (Rajasamaksham Irippu), enabling his descendants to hold powerful government treasury and administrative positions. Kurianouppen later returned to Kottayam and established the Puthenangadi market, but left his eldest son behind to secure the new lands. Settling in the wild forests of Pala, his descendants transformed the rugged terrain into flourishing agricultural properties.
Generations later, our grandfather from this lineage — descended from Vellioor Kurianappen — migrated to the wild forests near the Mullaperiyar Dam region, where he pointed from a treetop and said: to there. Six men lived in a house built into a treetop while they worked the boundary he had marked from up there — paddy, pepper, coffee, tapioca, planted right up to the line. A church went up at the boundary at the end on a hilltop. Then a town grew around the church. The family stayed close to all of it.
Valayathil — drawing its shape from the sweeping bends of the Meenachil River where the family first took refuge during exile, and meaning circle in Malayalam — is what that line became once it closed: a name, then a company, built on the same instinct that walked the boundary and carved a life out of the jungle in the first place. Different tools now. Same shape.
